Girls TY 10Km Challenge

The TY girls and Ms. Quinn would like to thank all the staff, students and parents who baked and bought at their bake sale for Longford Hospice on Friday the 28th of April. It was a great sucdess as the total amount raised was 503 euro. After fundraising for this very worthwhile local charity, the TY girls and Ms. Quinn are all looking forward to the second half of their Girls TY 10Km Challenge now. They will be becoming more active in the next few weeks in order to complete 10km at the Women's Mini Marathon in Dublin on the June Bank Holiday weekend. Mrs. Mc Tiernan has kindly volunteered to accompany them on this weekend. No doubt her help will be greatly appreciated too.

Thanks to Paddy O Connor and the Longford Co. Board who are providing 26 ty students with the first level GAA Coaching Course.

Thanks to Orla Keane, Niamh Hanley, Jason Coughlan and Oran Kenny who visited the daycare centre during the week.

The annual sleepover in the school gym took place on Wednesday night. The money collected goes to Bethany House and St. Martha’s homeless shelter Longford run by St. Vincent De Paul. Thanks to Mr. Broderick, Mr. Kenny, Mr. Burke, Ms. Matthews, Ms. Nevin and Ms. Bohan for supervising.  

Gaisce students did a 20 km walk on Wednesday last from Ballynacarrigy to school along the canal. Thanks to Mr. Dempsey and Ms. Carr and Helena Brady for accompanying the 45 students on this adventure.

The Ty1 and Ty2 students visited Bodaborg on Monday 24th. They enjoyed a day of solving puzzles. Thanks to Ms. McDonagh for accompanying the students.

On Wednesday last Mr Seery accompanied James Carroll, Sam Maxwell and Cronan Flood to Longford Student Entrepreneur Exhibition 2017 in Longford Shopping Centre.

Congratulations to the lads who came first in the competition and will go on to represent the School and County in the All-Ireland Student Entrepreneur competition later this year in Croke Park. The name of their company is “J and S Kitchen Aid” and they have designed a tool which one puts on the spine of a knife which helps chopping veg.

Last week 35 TY students attended an FRS Farm Safety course at Ballymahon Mart. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all students .Thanks to Mr. Munds who organised the day.

The Healthy Eating team of Sarah Dillon, Caoimhe Lohan, Clodagh Kenny, Aisling McCormack, Roisin Leen, Dylan Farrell, Laura Harkin, Kian Gilmore, Sam Maxwell, Sean Donohoe, Cian Belton, organised a Healthy Eating day on Thursday. They organised a fruit and veg tasting station in the open area. They also helped raise awareness by putting up posters around the school.

Thanks to everybody who attended the show and all our TY year students who worked so hard behind the scenes to make it such a success. The entire school community, have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This production has brought a great buzz to the school. We sincerely thank, Ms. Malone, Mr. Burke, Mr. Larkin and Mr. Broderick, who facilitated the production of ‘Through My Eyes’, an experience which we will never forget. We also thank our sponsors for their generosity in donating funds and spot prizes, both of which help enormously in making the show a success. We hope this show has lived up to expectations and we hope to see as large a crowd attend the next show in two years’ time.

The timetable for Transition Year home groups changed this week. Seven of our students Leon Walsh, Rachel Lyons, Ciara Foxe, Cronan Flood, Dylan Farrell, Mikolaj Wijas and Sarah Dillon were given a fantastic opportunity by An Garda Siochana, last week. They attended the Criminal Court in Dublin on Tuesday, they went to the Garda Station in Longford on Wednesday and
to Westmanstown-Garda Golf Club in Lucan on Thursday.  Thanks to Ms. Kenny, Ms. O Sullivan and Ms. Casey for travelling with the students:

TY News

Last week all TY classes had a talk from Youth Connect. Also Sadie Wheatley spoke with some transition year students about ideas for their mini companies. Two Ty classes have met with actor Alan Devin. Alan gave a Personal Development workshop which included ideas on speaking in front of other people.

All transition year students attended the Ger Carey show “Physco Spagetti” in the Back Stage theatre, on Monday 26th. This is a comic look into the life of a teenager. Thanks to their English teachers Ms. Gaffney, Ms. Daly and Ms. Towey for attending the show with them.
