Mercy Ballymahon Notes

School notes - 24/02/23

Athletics

Well done to all of our athletes who participated in the Connacht Cross Country event in Loughrea last week. Best of luck to the 3 athletes, Aisling Lane, Rachel Keenan and Max Gallagher, who are through to the all Ireland final in Waterford. Thank you to teachers Ms Fox and Ms Moran who are organising athletics in the school.

Basketball

Our first and second year boy’s teams faced Tullamore last week. First years won out on a score line of 29-15 with some excellent shooting, in particular Alex Doherty, Liam Mahon and Seosamh Mulvihill hitting some lovely 3 pointers!  Our second year boys had another win on a score line of 21-18. Well done to all.

LGFA

Well done to our U14 girls’ team who had an excellent win against Scoil Mhuire, Longford, on Friday last. The game finished on a score of 7-11 to 1-7. Thank you to team coaches Ms Duffy and Ms Gilleran.

Guidance

Last week our 6th Year students received a talk from the Guidance Service about studying in Europe. A big thank you to our past pupil Kate Mulvey who visited the school to tell students about her experience of studying Veterinary Medicine in Warsaw.  All information about studying in Europe can be found at www.eunicas.ie or email guidance@mercyballymahon.ie.

Green Schools

Thank you to everyone who has been participating in The Big Travel Challenge in association with Green Schools Ireland. We are encouraging students to walk to school for exercise, for mental health, to save money, for our community and, of course, for our environment!

Lent

Last week marked the beginning of Lent. On Ash Wednesday, we were delighted to receive a school visit from Sharon McGrath from CEIST. Thank you to Fr Liam for visiting the school to distribute ashes to staff and students. Thanks also to our Home Ec Teachers who made pancakes with their students to mark Shrove Tuesday.

TY Work experience

Last week our Transition Year students engaged in a week of work experience. A huge thank you to all employers and businesses who provided our students with the opportunity to work in various places of work. Without you, our students would not receive such invaluable experience.
