Mercy Ballymahon Notes

School notes - 03/02/23

Athletics

Congratulations to all of our athletes who participated in the North Connacht Cross Country event in Ballymote on Thursday 26th January. While many of these students have represented the school before, it was excellent so see a number of newcomers take to the tracks also. Nine of our athletes have qualified for the Connacht final; Ella Duignan, Owen Kenny, Max Gallagher, Kevin Óg Murphy, Rachel Keenan, Robin Óg Murphy, Katie Duignan, Aisling Lane and James Gillen. Well done to everyone and thank you to teachers Ms Fox and Ms Moran for organising. We look forward to more events later this year.

Rachel Keenan, Robin Óg Murphy, Amy Jordan and Katie Duignan representing Mercy Ballymahon at the North Connacht Cross Country event in Ballymote recently.

GAA

Hard luck to our Junior Boys’ Gaelic team who lost the North Leinster Quarter final last week against Ardscoil Rathangan. Thanks to coaches Mr. Nerney and Shane Kenny for their work with the team. Best of luck to Rathangan as they progress in the competition.

Ceilíuradh CEIST

On February 1st, St. Brigid’s Day, we celebrated Ceiliúradh CEIST for the second year. This day celebrates CEIST schools, our ethos and our values. On the day, we were delighted to welcome back Sister Maura Conlon and Sister Maura Faye to our school. They enjoyed meeting our teachers and students on a tour of our school. Thank you to Fr. Liam who also visited the school on Friday last to celebrate the Feast of St. Blaise to give the blessing of the throats to our teachers and students.

TY Activities

Last week all TY students took part in a hands-on driving education programme! Students had the opportunity to drive a vehicle with a qualified instructor and are also learning about changing wheels safely, experiencing ‘Beer Goggles’, using Sat navigation systems, the driver theory test, buying & taxing a vehicle & much more. Thank you to Bootcamp Driving School Longford and Irish School of Excellence for facilitating.

Green Schools

Our school is taking part in the The Big Travel Challenge 2023 for 10 school days beginning on Monday 20th February. For this challenge, students are encouraged to walk to school where it is safe and possible to do so. In the lead up to the challenge, we are organising a competition among all students to come up with creative ways of promoting walking to school. This can be anything - art, music, photography, video - it is totally open. Competition closes on Thursday 9th February.

Midterm Break

Reminder that Midterm break takes place next week. We hope that you all have a well-deserved break, especially our 3rd and 6th year students who have just finished their mock exams!
